Lumbar Spine Disc Herniation (Prolapse)
Part 1 – What Does It Feel Like?
The classic presentation of a disc herniation is of pain in the lower back, pain down
one leg, usually back of the thigh, to the calf and in some cases into the foot.
There are however a lot of variations of this and symptoms may be anything from a
dull constant lower back pain to pain in one or both legs, pins and needles, tingling
and weakness in the legs.
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and is made up of 5 nerve roots (one nerve root exits the spinal cord between every vertebrae). It supplies sensation
and muscle strength to most of the leg, buttock and groin so irritation of the sciatic
nerve can cause problems in any of thees areas.
These broad and inconsistent symptoms can also be a warning sign of other health
issues so always get it checked out.
