Let’s talk today about PREDIABETES
The CDC estimates that approx. 88 million American adults over the age of 20 have prediabetes. That equals to 1 in 3 Americans have prediabetes.
Prediabetes occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.
Over time, this can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Common risk factors include:
1.Obesity
2.Sedentary life
3.Family history of type 2 diabetes
4.Having African American, Latino/Hispanic or American Indian family background
5.Having gestational diabetes
Symptoms:
Unfortunately, there are almost no symptoms of prediabetes. The only way to know for sure is with a blood test called the Hemoglobin A1C.
How to treat and prevent prediabetes?
•Lifestyle changes
•Eating healthy
•Regular physical activity
•Maintaining a healthy weight
•Some medications can help to lower the risk of developing diabetes.
If you have any of the above risk factors please ask your provider to do a hemoglobin A1C, this should be done yearly or earlier if you have more than one risk factor.
Prediabetes does NOT have to convert to diabetes. You can change the path.
