🌿 Here’s little refresher on why BMI is a problematic (read: bullsh*t):
1️⃣ It was invented in the 19th century, a time when cocaine was recommended as a health supplement
2️⃣ It was created by a statistician/mathematician and was never intended to measure individual health. It was only ever meant to give an idea about trends in population
3️⃣ BMI can’t distinguish between fat and muscle, and muscle is about 18% more dense than fat
4️⃣ BMI measurements are too broad and it assumes one size will fit all
5️⃣ It doesn’t measure or take into account where on the body fat is carried. Visceral fat around your organs is can be particularly dangerous, but it’s possible to have a lot and still come out with a healthy BMI
6️⃣ A 2016 UCLA study concluded that tens of millions of people who had overweight and obese BMI scores were in fact perfectly healthy. They also found that 30% of people with “healthy” BMIs were in fact not healthy at all based on their other health data
🌿 The fact that BMI is so heavily relied upon in healthcare it’s dangerous due to the potential for discrimination towards and fat phobia felt by people in bigger bodies.
🌿 A recent Healthline article shared that 21% of patients feeling judged by their medical professional, which may lead them to hesitate seeking out care – this is NOT GOOD.
🌿 Seeing as we’re 200+ years on from the day BMI was created, surely we can develop something more accurate that has the potential to do less damage – physically AND psychologically.
