Ever since I managed to pick up yet another knee injury, I’ve spent a lot of thinking. Once I’d got past the ‘why me?’ stage, I started to think more rationally. I think it’s fair to say I’ve had the kick up the arse and the reality check I so desperately needed.
.
I know that using BMI as a method of classifying people is flawed. I know your BMI only uses your height and weight to determine where you fall. I know it doesn’t account your body frame and your body composition. However, my most recent results suggest I’ve sneaked into the overweight category for the first time in my life and that I should aim to lose 4.3 kg. The Chinese takeaways and other treats have finally caught up with me.
.
Then I did some research – I spent some time on Dr Google – and found a Runner’s World article about running and knee injuries. A couple of lines grabbed my attention:
.
“Extra weight places tremendous strain on your knees. The American College of Sports Medicine has said that each additional pound of body mass puts four extra pounds of stress on the knee…”
.
I did some maths and realised that I owe my knees an apology. I also owe them some weight loss; 4.3 kg would be a very good starting point.
.
I’ve included a photo of me taken after the Cathedral to Castle 10 mile run in 2018. That’s my target.
.
I got so caught up in the Couch to 5k I forgot what one of the basics of running.
.
“You can never outrun a bad diet”
.
So if you see me eating smoky bacon crisps and dairy milk chocolate for breakfast – yes, this has been my breakfast of choice since lockdown – you have permission to tape my mouth up.
