Economic and Social Burden of Back Pain. Using data from a National Health Survey in Spain, researchers report that 17% of Spanish men and 25% of Spanish women had low back pain in the previous year. Individuals with low back pain were more likely to be older, physically inactive, and overweight/obese. When lost productivity and healthcare expenses are considered, the research team estimates that low back pain consumes about .68% of the nation’s gross domestic product. Spine, August 2020
